Since mid-May, researchers from the Austrian Archaeological Institute have begun unearthing the bones.

In an extraordinary discovery while renovating his wine cellar, a man found the remains of a prehistoric mammoth buried deep in the ground.

Researchers from the Austrian Archaeological Institute Academy of Sciences described the find in the village as an “archeological sensation”.

Andreas Pernerstorfer, a winemaker, discovered a number of massive bones buried underground in his wine cellar in the village of Gobelsburg, in the Krems area, west of Vienna. He told authorities about his find, who identified it as the remains of at least three Stone Age mammoths.

“I thought it was just a piece of wood left by my grandfather. But then I dug it out a bit and then I remembered that in the past my grandfather said he had found teeth. And then I immediately thought it was a mammoth,” he said after the discovery.

Since mid-May, researchers from the Austrian Archaeological Institute have begun unearthing the bones.

According to archaeologists Thomas Einwögerer and Hannah Parow-Souchon, stone tools and charcoal discovered at the site date the bones to between 30,000 and 40,000 years ago.

According to the Institute, the last such discovery occurred 150 years ago in the Krems area.

“During the excavation there, the cellars in question were completely cleared out. Other comparable sites in Austria and neighbouring countries were mostly excavated at least 100 years ago and have largely been lost to modern research,” the Institute stated.

According to the researchers, the discovery raises issues regarding Stone Age mammoth hunting practices.

They believe the mammoths died on the place where the bones were discovered, maybe after being chased there by humans who set up a trap for them.

The bones will be transported to the Vienna Museum of Natural History, once excavated.
