A Kenyan mountaineer who went missing at the peak of Mount Everest has been discovered dead.
Joshua Cheruiyot Kirui, 40, and his Nepali guide Nawang Sherpa, 44, disappeared on Wednesday while attempting to summit Everest without supplemental oxygen.
The guide has yet to be found by the search team that was dispatched to find the two men, a local tourism official said.
Even expert climbers consider climbing Everest, the world’s highest peak, to be very difficult and perilous.
According to Nepalese newspaper the Himalayan Times, Sherpa informed the base camp that Kirui had displayed “abnormal behaviour” and “refused to return and even take bottled oxygen”.
According to base camp personnel, contact with the duo was lost shortly after the message.
Kirui was a banker for one of Kenya’s largest lenders.
The news of the death has devastated the Kenyan mountain climbing community.
“Our brother now rests on the mountain. It’s been a long night,” another Kenyan mountaineer James Muhia, who had been providing daily updates on Mr Kirui’s effort, wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
In a previous post, Muhia urged Kirui to complete the climb, claiming that he was fully equipped, physically capable, resilient, and highly trained.
He told the media that he accompanied Kirui on last year’s summit to Manaslu.
This week, Kirui’s death is the fourth recorded on Everest.
According to the Himalayan Times, a Romanian climber and a British climber, as well as his Nepalese guide, were discovered dead Tuesday.
