In the early hours of Thursday morning, a noteworthy incident unfolded at Boston Logan International Airport in Massachusetts, as two JetBlue aircraft collided on the tarmac. Fortunately, the collision, which involved JetBlue Flight 777 and JetBlue Flight 551, both Airbus A321s, resulted in no reported injuries. Nonetheless, it has prompted the United States’ preeminent aviation regulator, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), to launch an investigation into the matter.
The collision occurred when the “left winglet” of Flight 777 came into contact with the “right horizontal stabilizer” of Flight 551, causing damage to both aircraft. Flight 777 was in the process of maneuvering onto a de-icing pad lane in preparation for its scheduled departure to Las Vegas, while Flight 551 was stationed on an adjacent de-icing pad, preparing for its journey to Orlando, as per FAA reports.
FAA spokesperson Elizabeth Isham Cory clarified that the incident took place within a sector of the tarmac managed by the airline itself. The event transpired at approximately 6:40 a.m. local time.
“A wingtip grazed the tail of another aircraft. Fortunately, there were no injuries, but both flights had to be cancelled,” affirmed a spokesperson for Massport (Massachusetts Port Authority) to WBZ-TV, characterizing the incident as “very minor.
