‘Mohalla Assi’, the highly controversial film of Sunny Deol will finally be released on November 16, 2018, after a long wait and a lot of hurdles. Based on the popular Hindi novel ‘Kashi Ka Assi’ written by Sahitya Academy Award winner Dr. Kashi Nath Singh, this satirical comedy points the commercialization of Kashi and Ganges River. Set in the post-independence period between 1989 and 1990, it also includes the Ram Janmabhoomi issue and Mandal Commision implementation in the story.
The film centers Sunny Deol as a Sanskrit teacher and an orthodox religious priest. Sakshi Tanwar plays his wife while Saurabh Shukla is a fellow priest and Ravi Kishan is a notorious fellow seeking money by any means. They all live in a historical locality near Assi Ghat of Varanasi (Banaras). The film shows the series of events and how political people and businessmen play with the feelings of commoners.
Ever since its announcement, the film was in headlines. Initially, the director Chandraprakash Dwivedi stopped working due to non-payments of dues, later an FIR was lodged against Sunny Deol and the director for using abusive language and hurting the religious feelings. Finally, CBFC banned the release in April 2018. However, Delhi High Court lifts off the ban and ordered to release the film with just one cut and adult certification.
And now the film will finally hit theaters on November 16. It seems the day is much appropriate for the release as a huge protest will be held in Ayodhya on 25th of this month and the matter of Ram Janambhoomi is never out of trend.
