A devastating fire tore through a shanty town near Manila’s port area on Sunday night, destroying approximately 1,000 homes and leaving over 8,000 people homeless.

The blaze engulfed the Isla Putting Bato neighborhood in the Tondo district, one of Manila’s largest slum areas. While no deaths have been reported, authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire. The densely packed shanty homes allowed the flames to spread rapidly, according to Manila’s disaster management office.

Firefighters responded with engines on the ground, boats from Manila Bay, and two Philippine Air Force helicopters that scooped water from the bay to douseΒ theΒ flames.
