Over the previous two weeks, severe rains have caused floods and landslides in India’s northeast, killing at least 16 people and displacing more than 300,000 people, authorities said on Tuesday.
The Indian army and air force have been assisting with rescue efforts in Assam, one of the worst-hit states, where a military helicopter flew 13 fishermen to safety early Tuesday morning after being stranded for four days on a small island in the Brahmaputra, one of Asia’s largest rivers, according to officials.
The Brahmaputra River, which runs 1,280 kilometres (800 miles) through Assam before crossing into Bangladesh, overflows every year. However, this year’s additional rainfall has made the river, which is already known for its violent and erratic flow, even more dangerous to live near or on one of the more than 2,000 island villages in its path.
Landslides in the neighbouring state of Arunachal Pradesh, which borders China, have destroyed multiple roadways.
According to authorities, army troopers rescued 70 children and teachers from a flooded school in Changlang district. Similarly, significant flooding in Sikkim, Manipur, and Meghalaya destroyed roads and bridges.
According to government data, more than 80 people have perished in six northeastern states since the end of May as a result of floods and mudslides caused by heavy rains.
Back in Assam, animals at the iconic Kaziranga National Park, home to over 2,500 one-horned rhinos, are fleeing to higher ground to avoid the floods. Himanta Biswa Sarma, the state’s chief minister, stated that park guards are monitoring their movements to ensure their safety.
Landslides and floods are common during the country’s northeast monsoon season, which lasts from June to September.
According to a 2021 research by the Council on Energy, Environment, and Water, a New Delhi-based climate think tank, India, particularly Assam state, is regarded as one of the world’s most vulnerable regions to climate change due to increased rainfall and flooding.
