Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who has participated for Fiji in both rugby and athletics, finished third in his age group in the shot put at the Oceania Championships in Suva.
It is not uncommon for world leaders to participate in sporting activities, but winning a medal in an international competition is unusual. Rabuka won bronze in the 75-79 division for Oceania with a throw of 7.09 metres, trailing just two Australian competitors.
In a post on his Facebook page, PM Rabuka wrote: “Even at 75, I hope to inspire the younger generation to develop a habit of keeping fit and staying healthy.”
He added: “It was indeed a morale booster for me.”
PM Rabuka is an ex-soldier who returned to power in 2022 after a 23-year absence. The former lieutenant colonel launched two coups in 1987, acquiring the nickname “Rambo” for seizing power after troops stormed parliament on his orders. He retired from the military to enter politics, bringing his no-nonsense command style from the parade field to Parliament.
He was elected prime minister in 1992 and served until he was defeated in the 1999 elections. Following the December 2022 elections, Rabuka returned to lead the coalition government.
