A passenger bus and a cargo train crashed in central Peru on Sunday, making four deaths and injuring more than 30 people, according to the country’s national police.
Authorities said the crash occurred shortly after 4 a.m. in the region of La Oroya, some 110 miles (177 km) east of Lima.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, the cause is currently being investigated. It stated that the train and bus, both privately run, have all necessary permissions.
The ministry stated that all of the injured were sent to a neighbouring hospital. The agency did not immediately name the deceased.
Highway Police Commander Justo Venero informed RPP radio station that the crash site features speed-limit and train-crossing road signage.
Commander Venero stated that the train’s driver informed authorities that its “audible and visible signals” were on when the incident occurred. The bus left Lima for Huancayo.
