Indonesia is prone to landslides during the rainy season.
Heavy rains have caused landslides in two villages in the Tana Toraja district of South Sulawesi province.
The final death toll from a landslide in the central Indonesian province of Sulawesi on Saturday April 13 has risen to 20, the authorities announced on Tuesday, bringing the search for victims to an end.
In the last few hours, rescue workers discovered the bodies of a 43-year-old mother and her 3-year-old child.
“The search and rescue team discovered [the victims] not far from each other. The victims were a mother and child,” confirmed the head of the local search and rescue agency, Mexianus Bekabel.
The heavy rains eroded the soil in residential areas on mountainsides, triggering landslides that buried residents’ homes.
Indonesia is prone to landslides during the rainy season, and the phenomenon has been exacerbated in some areas by deforestation.
In early March, flash floods and landslides on the island of Sumatra killed at least 30 people, and dozens more are still missing.
