Kalaakaandi: A story of misfits and mavericks
Leaving apart some exceptions, Saif Ali Khan starrers are mostly no-misses. An ode to Mumbai as a living, breathing character, Kaalakaandi can easily be considered a Saif-entertainer. This film is the first directorial venture of the Delhi Belly scriptwriter Akshat Verma. A befitting representation of dark humor and the paradoxical concepts of greed, mortality, moral ambiguity, drugs and sex, this film brings out a combination of good performances and great picturization.
Released on 12th January 2018, the film stars Saif Ali Khan, Sobhita Dhulipala, Kunal Roy Kapoor, Akshay Oberoi, Neil Bhoopalam, among many others. The film revolves around the story of a man who has been detected with cancer and lets loose of his life before the impending submission to the terminal disease. Racing through the nightlife and underbelly of Mumbai, the film has a pitch-black comic take on the issues of cheating, prostitution, rave parties, drugs, and so on. Parallel story lines are weaved together by a single thread that is revealed at the end of the film and the crazy sub plots run for long enough to pique our curiosity.
The performances are brilliant, with Saif in his best avatar. The background music enhances the overall feel of the film. Kudos to Akshat for retaining his unique vibe and directing the sub-plots and main story line in a scattered yet well-aligned sync. Overall, the film is a breath of fresh air and is a must-watch for all the movie junkies out there!
