Akshay Kumar’s PadMan to target menstruation stigma
One of Bollywood’s lead action heroes and the finest actors, Akshay Kumar, is all set for the release of his revolutionary film ‘PadMan’. The film, produced by his wife and author Twinkle Khanna, and, directed by R Balki, aims to normalize menstruation and remove the shame and stigma surrounding periods in India.
The film is based on social entrepreneur Arunachalam Muruganantham, who developed a low cost sanitary napkin producing machine, in order to make sanitary facilities available to poor and rural women and girls. Akshay Kumar adds that he didn’t want to make a documentary and chose to make a commercial film because only then will people speak about menstruation in a normal way and be open about it. Commercial films can normalize social stigmas in a way no other media can.
Twinkle Khanna adds that she chose to make this film because of the universal topic of menstruation and also because Arunachalam fought against all odds to improve the lives of women. Known as India’s Menstrual Man, his story is truly inspiring and should be brought to people in order to transform the society.
Starring Sonam Kapoor, Radhika Apte and Akshay Kapoor in lead roles, Pad Man is all set to release on 26th January, 2018. We can’t to watch Akshay super-heroing without a cape!
